Before You Have An Affair, Remember This
Who hacked Ashley Madison?
Back in August 2015, the ‘dating’ site Ashley Madison was hacked, exposing married cheaters the world over. We found out 86 per cent of the site’s users were men, São Paulo had the most registered users of any city and it’s mainly used by rich, powerful men.Jan 16, 2017

Linking those images to real-world individuals would not be hard, said the researchers. Users may be anonymized, but by crosschecking usernames on other social sites, they were able to connect people to their Ashley Madison accounts. The site is run by Canadian company Avid Life Media, which operates a portfolio of similarly niche and controversial dating sites, including Cougar Life (for older women seeking younger men) and Established Men (“Connecting young, beautiful women with interesting men”). When Ashley Madison was hacked in 2015, the hackers said in a message that the users didn’t deserve online privacy because they were “cheating dirtbags.” Danielle Keats Citron, who teaches information privacy and free speech law at the University of Maryland, spoke out about this language at the time. Citron is a staunch advocate for online privacy, no matter what people do with their sex lives.
The site won’t ask for your name; instead, it will ask you to provide a unique username as your identification. For women, making connections and starting conversations on Ashley Madison is entirely free.
As a hive of cheaters, it has long been the antagonist of betrayed spouses. It was an inevitable target for hackers. And the company behind the website, Avid Life Media, knew it couldn’t protect user data. What about people who used Ashley Madison to engage in gay affairs?
Kristin joined Ashley Madison in search of an escape from married life, and she found a discreet, nonjudgmental community to call her own. The more she chatted and flirted, the more she realized her true nature as a polyamorous dater.

There were reported suicides as humiliation and panic hit in dozens of countries around the world. And yet more people have signed up to Ashley Madison since the hack than had signed up before. And that is extraordinary. He said it was the discretion factor that attracted him to Ashley Madison over other dating sites, because he didn’t want to digitally run into any of his friends or acquaintances while he’s going through his separation. With Ashley Madison, certain information on your profile and pictures are only visible to people when you want them to see them.
- It was an inevitable target for hackers.
- From photo sharing (photos can be made blurry or only shared using a private key), to calling customer service (reps pick up the phone with a generic greeting), to billing (receipts don’t mention Ashley Madison), every part of the website has been designed to take the stress out of online cheating.
- That said, the mere fact that a person’s data was included in the leak does not mean that they used the site to have an affair, says Tod Beardsley of information security firm Rapid 7.
- The company is in the testing phases of implementing “cheating coaches” in an effort to help those users who do not have much experience with online dating.
- Ashley Madison has a registration process that anyone can easily understand.
What can be done in your company?
Ashley Madison, founded in 2001 and known as the website for married dating, suffered a huge reputational hit when a group of hackers released a trove of user data to the public in 2015 (the website claims that it has had as many as 50 million users and was, at one point, valued at $1 billion). Many active users fled the site or cooled their use for a few months. But once the dust had settled and other scandals entered the headlines, many people largely forgot about Ashley Madison. And for women like Lindsey, using the site still feels like a less risky form of cheating.
What does collect message mean on Ashley Madison?
You have the option of sending ‘Collect Messages’. This means the receiver can, if he/she chooses to, pay for the message in credits. This is much like making a collect phone call. When a guy sends a ‘Collect Message’ on Ashley Madison, it makes him come across as a cheapskate.
The 2018 Report on Customer Statistics further revealed that for every active paid male account there was 1.11 active female accounts created in 2018. This report validates and clearly demonstrates the health and vibrancy of this unique community of like-minded people.
How does Ashley Madison work?
How does the site work? Unlike many dating sites, Ashley Madison does not charge for membership directly. Instead, users pay for credits, which are used to send messages and open chat sessions. Users can also use their credits to send gifts, or pay more to put their message at the top of a (female) members inbox.Aug 20, 2015
Here is what she told me. In July 2015, a group calling itself “The Impact Team” stole the user data of Ashley Madison, a commercial website billed as enabling extramarital affairs. The group copied personal information about the site’s user base and threatened to release users’ names and personally identifying information if Ashley Madison would not immediately shut down.
It didn’t start in the usual way, with me meeting someone. It started with rage.
